Gen. of Volunteers, Peninsula campaign, commanded II Corps at Fredericksburg, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, led Stoneman's raid during the Chancellorsville campaign, chief of cavalry bureau in Washington, commanded XXIII Corps in the West, commanded cavalry in XXIII Corps, captured during a raid in July 1864, exchanged after 3 months, commanded the Dist. of East Tennessee, raided in North Carolina during the Carolinas campaign.
