Engraved by C.E. Wagstad. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1609 1674), played a crucial role in English politics during the turbulent 17th century. Initially serving as a legal advisor to King Charles I, Hyde became a key figure in the Royalist government after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. As the Lord Chancellor to King Charles II, he was influential in the formulation of the Clarendon Code, a series of laws aimed at suppressing Nonconformists and reinforcing the dominance of the Anglican Church. However, Clarendon's political fortunes waned during the Exclusion Crisis of the late 1670s, marked by attempts to exclude James, Duke of York, from the throne due to his Catholicism. Facing impeachment by the House of Commons in 1667, Clarendon fled to France before the trial. In addition to his political career, he made lasting contributions to history with his comprehensive work, "The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England," providing a detailed account of the English Civil War and its aftermath. Despite his fall from power, Lord Clarendon's impact on both politics and historical literature endures as a significant aspect of England's 17th-century landscape.Approximate Image Size: 5 ins x 4 ins.
