Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (c. 1473 1530) wielded significant influence as a chief advisor and Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII. Rising from humble beginnings, he became Archbishop of York and Bishop of Durham before being appointed a cardinal in 1515. Wolsey played a key role in shaping domestic and foreign policies, but his ambitious projects faced criticism. His ultimate challenge was securing a papal annulment for Henry VIII's marriage, which failed, leading to his dismissal in 1529 and subsequent charges of treason. Wolsey died in 1530 before facing trial. Despite his fall, he left a legacy through contributions to education, including the founding of Cardinal College, and remains a complex figure in Tudor history. Engraved By: W.H. Mote.
