A native of San Francisco, California, Carter began his career as a journalist and lawyer. As time passed, he grew an interest in magic. Due to stiff competition from the number of magic acts on the American stages at the time, Carter opted to pursue his career abroad, where he achieved his greatest fame. Among the highlights of Carter's stage performances during his career were the classic "cheating the gallows", where a shrouded Carter would vanish, just as he dropped at the end of a hangman's noose. This poster depicts the climax of that act. The Poster is done in lithography with the colours put on separately by the foremost America Film poster company OTIS of Cleveland. The colours are vibrant, there are some light creases. No loss and still having the colour grid at border and also the measurement cross-hatching for the poster to be aligned when pasting up. A LOVELY and Unique POSTER that would suit a home with style, or for a Magic Museum type setting. Dates to about 1918-25 Carter (Charles Joseph) purchased the famous Martinka Magic Palace In San Fransisco in 1917, a time when he was unable to continue his lucrative world touring magic show. There was a story that he kept his lion, Monty in the back room of the shop and when it would roar, the startled customers would run for the door. He was the Magicians answer to Houdini who was an "escapologist". Carter was the consummate stage prestidigitator par-excellence, to Houdini's talented lock picking breath holding feats of the pre-Great War era. N° de ref. del artículo 2190
