Edmund Blampied is one of the Channel Islands most significant and best known artists. He was born on a farm in the Parish of St Martin, Jersey, on 30 March 1886, the youngest of four sons of John and Elizabeth Blampied. He received early training at a private arts school on Jersey. He then won a scholarship to Lambeth School of Art, where he was taught by Philip Connard and Thomas McKeggie. Working part-time on the staff of The Daily Chronicle his illustrations were first published in 1905. Blampied s earliest etching date to 1909 and they were first exhibited in 1914. Much of his work at that time were illustrations for many national publications including Pearson s Magazine, The Sketch, The Sphere and The Graphic. His etching came to the attention of the art dealers and publishers Ernest Brown and Philips of the Leicester Galleries who, in 1915, offered him a contract from a series of exhibitions. In 1920 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, becoming a full member in the following year. During his career he produced some 200 etchings and drypoints and more than 80 lithographic prints. His prints and drawings are in the numerous public collections.
