The Battle of Lookout Mountain, fought on November 24, 1863, during the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War, was a pivotal engagement that played a significant role in the Union victory in the Western Theater. Under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant, the Union Army, led by General George H. Thomas, faced Confederate forces commanded by General Braxton Bragg. The battle took place around Lookout Mountain in Tennessee and became famously known as the "Battle Above the Clouds" due to the foggy conditions on the mountain slopes. Union forces, employing effective military tactics, successfully scaled Lookout Mountain, securing a crucial position in the overall campaign. The victory at Lookout Mountain, coupled with successes at Missionary Ridge and other strategic points, forced the Confederate retreat and lifted the siege of Chattanooga. The Battle of Lookout Mountain showcased the importance of terrain and strategic positioning in military operations and contributed significantly to the Union's control of key areas in the Western Theater.
