The Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775, early in the American Revolutionary War, stands as a pivotal and iconic moment in the conflict. Despite its name, the majority of the battle actually took place on nearby Breed's Hill. The American forces, under the command of Colonel William Prescott, demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic acumen by fortifying their position on Breed's Hill. Facing superior British forces led by Generals William Howe and Sir Henry Clinton, the Americans inflicted heavy casualties during the initial assaults. However, due to a shortage of ammunition, they were ultimately forced to abandon their position, leading to a British victory. The Battle of Bunker Hill showcased the determination of the colonial forces and marked an early demonstration of their ability to stand up against professional British soldiers. Although technically a British victory, the battle had a profound impact on boosting American morale and solidifying the resolve for independence.Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
