The Battle of Palo Alto, fought on May 8, 1846, was the first major engagement of the Mexican-American War. It took place near present-day Brownsville, Texas, along the banks of the Rio Grande. American forces, under the command of General Zachary Taylor, clashed with Mexican forces led by General Mariano Arista. The battle began when Mexican artillery fired on American troops, leading to a day-long engagement. Despite being outnumbered, Taylor's forces utilized superior tactics and artillery to repel the Mexican attacks. The battle ended in an American victory, with Mexican forces retreating across the Rio Grande.
