Copperplate engraving on a verge type hand laid paper. The paper is a thick flocked type with verge lines barely visible, but clearly present. Watermark not recognizable. We had the paper assessed by expert. on paper. Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 30 x 21.7 cm. The image size is ca. 29.4 x 21.1 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 11.8 x 8.5 inch. The image size is ca. 11.6 x 8.3 inch.Plate 78: Hunting quails in the autumn using a quail mimicking pipe and nets. (Bottom latin text: 'Sic Autumnali capitur peregrina Coturnix .') This rare antique copperplate engraving originates from: 'Venationes ferarum, auium, piscium. Pugnae bestiariorum: & mutuae bestiarum.' The first recorded issue was dated 1578 and published in Antwerp by Phillip Galle with 104 plates. Based on the excellent quality of the print, paper type and assessment by an expert, we believe this print to be from a 1636 edition published by Joannes Galle, whose name is on the plate being the publisher (Ioan Galle excud.) Later 17th. c. editions exist published by Nicolaes Visscher and Joannes Janssonius and others. Artists and Engravers: No engraver address on this plate but possibly this plate is engraved by Joannes Collaert after Joannes Stradanus, although other engravers have worked on this plates from this series. Joannes Stradanus (Brugge, 1523 - Florence, 1605) or Jan van der Straet, Giovanni della Strada, Giovanni Stradano, Giovanni Stratensis, worked principally in Italy as a designer of cartoons for tapestries. From 1553-1571 he was employed by Cosimo de Medici who commissioned him to make a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. These are the designs so magnificently commemorated in the Venationes, blending well-tried renaissance hunting methods with fabulous subject matter drawn from Persia, India and the East. Joannes (Hans, Jan) Collaert (Antwerp, c. 1545 - 1628) was a Flemish engraver, son of Adrian Collaert.Condition: Fine. Beautiful nice dark impression. General age related toning and minimal soiling from handling. Some remains of previous attachment in rear corners. Cut, as usual, just outside the plate marks, which are mostly visible. Small tear at right (ca. 7cm from bottom), backed by paper and barely visible. A few light paper spots reinforced with paper.
