FIRST EDITION. Small 8 vo. Orig. printed boards, rebacked. Uncut. xv, (1), (13)-211 pp. Old stain on front board, minor rubbing of boards, occasionally light spotty foxing; a very good copy. Dedicated to General Andrew Jackson, Ira Hill (c.1783-1838) proposes a theory of the earth based in Biblical 'Genesis' modified overtime by catastrophes in the manner of Cuvier's proposals. Hill provides detailed geological evidence to support this view with particular attention to the American continent. The usual secondary literature has nothing on Ira Hill except for George H. Daniels ('American science in the age of Jackson', 1968, pp. 160 & 269) who notes Jared Sparks' criticism: "Ira Hill's theory, which Sparks had been protesting against, outlined a chemical process whereby the earth was formed 'out of the original elements of chaos'." The rear printed board carries the publisher's description of the American edition of Larrey's 'Surgical memoirs' to be published the first of October. Very scarce in the original printed boards. Hazen 5060. Geology Emerging 1067. Shoemaker 12827. N° de ref. de la librería 000269
