Light wear to extremities with more moderate scuffing to bottom edge of front board. Rodent damage appears at this bottom edge. Light creasing to spine with minor scuffing to corners. Lovely hand made bookplate of Philip Cromwell on pastedown. Colors remain vibrant on plate. Interior lightly toned with typically age staining and some minor dampness staining. Printer s error at leaf 97 at edge. Edge is misprinted affecting the text slightly. Leaf 5 of Horne text is ripped but intact. Binding tight and intact. Sound. Please see photos. Rare edition of this influential work. It contains sometimes lurid accounts of religious and cultural practices in India, including, for example, a selection on Immolation of Females First published in 1811, the work was issued in several editions in England and America. It was translated into several languages. Buchanan s writings were considered authoritative in America and helped to stimulate the American missionary movement and to shape American attitudes towards non-Christians. .
