3 volumes, 8vo, pp 496: 480: 469, [1, list of plates], [2, adverts], 3 extra engraved title pages, 47 engraved portraits as required, pleasantly bound in contemporary half pale calf, sides and endpapers marbled, spines gilt ruled with decorated flat raised bands, a little rubbed at joints and spine ends, very occasional minor spotting but generally fine and clean throughout, an excellent set, FIRST EDITION; Wilson's extensive collection became something of a classic during the Nineteenth Century, reprinted or enlarged several times, each time of course taking on a character quite different from this original printing. It was, in fact, in part plagarized from an earlier periodical publication by Caulfield on eccentric characters, much expanded and illustrated with a series of 50 oft reproduced prints.
