Sinopsis: From Harriet Quimbly to Amelia Earhart, to the Wasp of World War II and Sally Ride, American women have made their mark alongside aviation's Immortals. Yet, almost nothing has been written about women airline pilots.
Sari Schnepf began a journal at the age of 14 in 1970 with the dream of becoming an airline pilot. However, there were no women flying for the Majors at that time. Now we have a journal which documents that journey. Sari became the first woman among 550 men to be hired by a major airline In California; PSA which was later absorbed by USAir. Wings of Eagles is Her story.
From the Back Cover:
Wings of Eagles is based on my daughter's hand-written journals begun when she was fourteen years of age. It documents her life dream and career devoted to becoming an airline pilot when women were not yet accepted as First Officers for the major airlines.
In 1978 that dream was fulfilled when Sari March Schnepf became the first female First Officer (copilot) for Air New England. Then came a succession of flying for small commuter airlines and finally, in 1981, Sari became the first female pilot hired by Pacific Southwest Airlines among 550 men. She subsequently flew for USAir when that airline merged with PSA.
Sari's husband sent me her journals in 2004, two years after she passed away from Lupus. As an historian I realized how significant my daughter's experiences were at the dawn of this breakthrough for women in the 1980s. We have books written on Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride but neither one of these women were airline pilots. Hence Wings of Eagles.
