Slight browning, boards just slightly bumped, tear to top edge of page v (text unaffected). Good-plus. Lacks dust-wrapper. "In putting together this book I have kept to the subject as far as possible in describing parts of the world which are still inhabited by wild animals and primitive tribes. I have, however, digressed once or twice; for I feel that such places as the old Chinese city of Tengyeuh or Zanzibar, the Spice Island, cannot be passed over. I should like to explain that I make no pretence of being a scientist; I simply lay down facts concerning countries and peoples as they strike the mind of an ordinary person. Similarly, I make no claims of singularity regarding my big game hunting experiences - they are typical of the everyday occurrences in the life of a shikari. .I left England at the end of 1922, and my first three years were spent in India. Then a year in Burma, followed by an expedition across the North East Frontier into China. Afterwards I crossed India again and sailed from Goa to East Africa in 1927. During most of the time I was on military service; but from my days spent hunting and wandering I have culled these pages." (From the author's preface). "This engaging book of travel and sport in wild lands is written by a realist with a keen if ingenuous eye. Mr. Leslie writes in a simple, direct and, at the same time, compulsive style of the facts and impressions of his wanderings in the Sunderbunds of the Ganges Delta, in the Himalayas, in Orissa, in Burma, in the wildest parts of the Chinese-India frontier, in Tanganyika and in Labrador. No one can read his pages without being pleasantly instructed upon the inhabitants, scenery and animals of these many diverse countries." (From the foreword by Winston S. Churchill). Chapters include:- Among the Santals; The Sikkim Himalayas; The Jelap Pass; By the Bay of Bengal; The elephant country; The Sunderbunds; Rivers and crocodiles; Temples and sand; After bison in Orissa; In the Burmese jungle; Across the North East Frontier; Into mediaeval China; The people of the Crossbow; Tanganyika territory; The African bush; Lion and rhino; In Labrador wilds; Exploring the Kenamu.
