Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Charles Mozley Ilustrador. First American Edition. [the teensiest bit of shelfwear to book, previous owner's initials plus date and place of purchase written along edge of rear pastedown (hidden by rear jacket flap); the jacket is flawless but for a slight circular discoloration from a removed label that had covered the original printed price; considering that the jacket is on uncoated pink stock, this would indicate that it's been protected in a jacket cover for virtually its entire existence]. One of numerous attempts to flesh out "the beginning of a good story and a number of promising characters" into a full-length novel, an effort that began as early as the mid-19th century, just a few decades after Austen's death in 1817. (It's generally agreed that she began work on it in 1803, but abandoned it in 1805 following the death of her father.) Wikipedia reports that "even before the manuscript fragment was eventually published in 1871, a continuation based on it by Austen's niece appeared in 1850. Further completions and adaptations of the story have continued to the present day," some created and/or sanctioned by her own descendants. Coates's effort, it seems, has been generally regarded as one of the better ones, having been (in the words of one bibliographer) "more successful in capturing the feel of early 19th-century society than many of the other sequels," albeit overall a "much lighter and cheerier" book than Austen herself had probably intended.
