Descripción

Edition : New Edition. , Early 20th century full green-black morocco calf; boards with single gilt fillet border and inner decorative dentelles. Spine with six raised gilt tooled bands with burgundy gilt title on two and three and densely gilt compartments. All edges uncut. , The Parisian jeweller Jean Chardin, born in Paris, was the son of a wealthy merchant, himself jeweller of the Place Dauphine. In 1664 Chardin left France with another merchant to journey to the East, arriving in Persia in 1666. King Suleiman I, assigned the task of purchasing jewels which led Chardin to visit India. He returned to Persia in 1669 and to France the following year where he published his notes of his voyage in 1671 then leaving France for Persia once again. His time during 1672 in Constantinople was adventurous. Chardin made his escape to Persia across the Black Sea reaching Ispahan in 1673 where he stayed four years, followed the court in all its movements, thus making journeys throughout Persia. He also journeyed to several Indian cities, realising wealth. He returned to France in 1677 and documented his travels in publications. Chardin later moved to England, where he was received at court, soon appointed court jeweller and knighted in 1681. This jeweller became renowned as 'the flower of merchants' spending his free time on oriental studies. The remains of Chardin's library were later sold by James Levy at Tom's coffee-house, St. Martin's Lane, 1712-13. Chardin's work is valued for its fullness and fidelity; he received praise from Enlightenment thinkers such as Montesquieu,Rousseau, Voltaire, Gibbon, as well as Helvetius and Sir William Jones. Scholars of Persia also vouch for his importance; according to John Emerson, "his information on Safavid Persia outranks that of all other Western writers in range, depth, accuracy, and judiciousness." The most complete reprinted work on his travels is the present one augmented by notes of Orientalist Louis-Mathieu Langlès, 1811, in French, and considered by modern scholars to be the standard version. Chardin gave faithful accounts of what he witnessed in clear, unambiguous, and simple language., Size : Folio (550x356mm). , The atlas volume is illustrated with 65 sheets bearing 86 engravings which include: a frontis portrait of Chardin, two maps, of which one is a folding map of Persia and the other a map of the Black Sea, 9 additional folded sheets, 18 double plate sheets, 1 quadruple plate sheet, plus single plate sheets. , Volume : Atlas volume only, References : Weber 381; Graesse II 13; Wilson 40, Half-title, blank (2), frontis, engraved title, blank, map, 86 engravings.
