In good condition. Ex-library. Later 19th century binding in nice condition with minimal scuffing, light edge wear. A few areas of dryness along hinges, corners. Light creasing to spine. Gilt finishing remains intact. Bookplate of Alfred Falk on front pastedown. A few small tears in maps, the largest tear being on the front map. Some light offsetting from plates. Interior lightly age-toned. Nominal foxing throughout. Free of known markings. Light dampness staining in rear. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. First English edition, first published in Paris in 1803. Constantin François de Chassebouf, comte de Volney was a philosopher, historian, politician born and traveler. He recorded his journeys to Egypt, Palestine and the Lebanon in "Voyage en Egypt et en Syrie" in 1787. In 1795 he traveled to the United States but in 1798 was forced to return home after being accused by the Adam's administration of being a French spy sent to prepare for a French re-occupation of Louisiana.
