Three programs of the Vancouver Musical Society, one for the years 1913-14, two for the years 1914-15 - comprised of six pages, four pages and eight pages respectively, measuring 22, 26 and 23 cm. respectively. All Very Good to Very Good+ in self wraps, some light foxing. The first program announces the annual Christmas performance of Handel's Messiah at the First Presbyterian Church on Dec. 13, 1913 with George P.Hicks conducting. The second announces a Grand Miscellaneous Concert including chorus and orchestra with 200 performers, with George Hicks again conducting. The third program is for the annual Christmas performance of Messiah with the same conductor as well as his brother, the more prominent Gideon Hicks of Victoria, the latter singing Bass. Very rich in historical information on the society - lists patrons, members of orchestra and chorus, feature performers, etc. Almost a who's who of the Vancouver classical music circle in Vancouver at this early period. The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada offers the following information on the musical Hicks family of Vancouver and Victoria featured in these programs: "Hicks, Gideon. Bass-baritone, teacher, conductor, b Stoke-Climsland, Cornwall, England, 24 Jun 1868, d Victoria, BC, 23 Nov 1958. A pupil of C.C. Bethune in London, where he sang in concert and oratorio, Hicks moved to Vancouver in 1889. Though at first a carpenter, he played flute in Vancouver's first orchestra, sang locally, and tuned pianos on Vancouver Island and in the Fraser Valley. He also established the short-lived piano firm Hicks and Lovick. He moved in 1898 to Victoria, where he was choirmaster 1898-1909 at Metropolitan Church and conductor of the Victoria Choral Society. With an augmented church choir and orchestra he conducted Messiah and The Creation with such soloists as Emma Albani and Robert Watkin-Mills. Until 1922 he was manager for Vancouver Island of Heintzman & Co. . . Hicks' brothers George and William also were active musically, George as conductor of the Vancouver Choral Society and first supervisor of music 1904-19 in Vancouver schools, William as a choirmaster in New Westminster, BC."
