This Democratic politician served as North Carolina's senator from 1932 to 1945. TNS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1937 April 26. Addressed to future Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "United States Senate" letterhead, Reynolds thanks Gates for writing and transmits a signed copy of a speech. Large bold signature in blue fountain pen. Also present is the aforementioned speech: TMS, 5pp (rectos only), 8½" X 11", n.p., 1937 April 22. Near fine. Single faint horizontal fold at center; single staple at upper left, not affecting text. Mimeographed text captioned "(Radio Address by Senator Robert R. Reynolds / of North Carolina, over the Columbia / Broadcasting System, at 5 PM, April 22, 1937)." Double-spaced text begins, "During the last forty-eight hours you have undoubtedly heard and read much with regard to the President's latest budget message to the Congress. It relates to Federal expenditures and methods for financing these expenditures. It is characterized by frankness and sincerity. It warns the National Legislature, and through it the American people, that expanded relief and other projects, however meritorious, must be met with new taxes." Reynolds supports and elaborates Roosevelt's position. At upper right of front page, he boldly pens (and misdates): "Robert R. Reynolds / U.S.S. / April 27, 1936." A most interesting and unusual FDR critique in a seldom-seen form. N° de ref. de la librería 26580
