Extremities worn and small lower margin tear, p. 41, just touching text, but otherwise a very good copy. Large calligraphic signature of 1793 on verso of title. 'Walkingame's fame rests on his single publication' (DNB), which was one of the most successful arithmetic books ever published. From its first edition of 1751, it remained in print with very little alteration for well over a century and it is considered that over 275 different editions appeared, many in provincial centres, with Gainsborough editions being recorded at least until 1811. The Tutor's Assistant was a very practically orientated work, using numerous commercial examples and this may help to account for its popularity. Walkingame (1723-83) was the master of a boarding school in Kensington when the title first appeared and it was originally compiled for use there.
