Descripción
This is the 1945 Reprint edition published by The Heritage Press of "The Story of Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier des Grieux" by The Abbé Prévost D'Exiles. The story was translated by Helen Waddell, and the illustrations, including frontispiece and title page line drawing were done by Pierre Brissaud. The book is quite lovely, issued in a quarter-bound format: paper-covered boards with dramatically colored marbled effect - and a lush-looking, brown, faux-leather spine; the spine has gilt lettering against a dark brown panel, bordered by a thin gilt thin. The top edge of the text-block is dyed a reddish brown. Measuring approximately 7" x 9 3/4", and having xiv + 155 pages, this elegant book would add a handsome decorative effect to your room - to say nothing of the pleasure to be derived from reading this French story of lost love and society's more dubious pleasures. It is a classic 'bildungsroman' (a coming-of-age story). ******************************************** This book is marvelously well preserved : bright and attractive with near-negligible signs of handling. This is because the slipcase , which has considerable wear about its edges, has done its job admirably. ******************************************* TITLE : The Story of Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier des Grieux / AUTHOR : The Abbé Prévost D'Exiles (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, 1697 - 1763) - French priest, author, and novelist / TRANSLATOR : Helen Waddell (Helen Jane Waddell, 1889 - 1965) Irish poet, translator and playwright as well as an accomplished scholar and literary all-about. / ILLUSTRATOR : Pierre Brissaud (1885 - 1964) A Collected French Art Deco illustrator, painter, and engraver who also illustrated many books. / IMPRINT : The Heritage Press / PLACE : New York / DATE : ( @1945 ) [1945] / EDITION : Reprint.
