Undated but 1897. First edition, hardback bound in the original red cloth titled in gilt on spine and with illustration in gilt on upper board. Top edge gilt.19.5 × 14cm, xvi + 413pp, 2pp ads. A convoluted historical fantasy with stories within the story; of a magic mirror wrought be geniis through which the future may be seen, of the supernatural nature of the Orient, and of flying demons. The protagonists of the tale, beginning in Persia in the sixth century BCE, finally achieve romantic union after travels Underground, Under the Sea, to the Moon, and into the deep past and to Victorian England via magical Time Travel. A very eccentric novel which defies synopsis. Illustrated throughout in all manner of styles. Condition: A very good copy. There is some bumping to the red cloth boards and the spine is faded. There are few small dark spotted marks to the spine, and a few marks to the rear board. Previous owner's gift inscription to the ffep.
