A complete set of the auction catalogues for the 9-part, 3,672-lot landmark sale of the Library of H. Bradley Martin (1906-1988), consisting of: (i) John James Audubon, Magnificent Books and Manuscripts (June 6, 1989); (ii) Magnificent Color-Plate Ornithology (June 7, 1989); (iii) The Original Watercolors for Selby's Illustrations of British Ornithology (June 8, 1989); (iv) Highly Important French Literature (October 16 and 17, 1989); (v) Highly Important Illustrated and Scientific Ornithology (December 12 and 13, 1989); (vi) Highly Important American and Children's Literature (January 30 and 31, 1990); (vii) Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana (January 31, 1990); (viii) Highly Important English Literature (April 30 and May 1, 1990); and (ix) Highly Important Printed Books and Illuminated Manuscripts (June 14, 1990). All sales were held in New York, except for (iv), which was held in Monaco. Printed Auction Estimates list laid in for all parts; printed Sale Results list laid in for parts (vi) and (vii) only. Also laid in is a Sotheby's promotional brochure for this sale. Robert S Pirie's copies, with the Robert S Pirie Reference Library book label in each volume. Condition is mixed: parts (i) through (v) fine and unmarked; small dampstain to upper spine of parts (iv), (v) and (vi) (not affecting text); parts (vii), (viii) and (ix) have some marginal annotations/comments/prices in Pirie's hand, most heavily in part (viii), not surprisingly given that Pirie was a major collector of the Elizabethans; several leaves with annotations dogeared.
