In Spanish. 1945 first edition thus Editorial Porrua (Mexico City, Mexico), two 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches tall paperbound volumes in beige printed wraps, covers and title pages in black and red ink, fore and bottom page edges untrimmed, xii, 344, 350 pp. Light soiling, creasing, rubbing and edgewear to covers. Half-inch closed tear to fore edge of Volume 1. Prior owner bookplate to verso of front cover on both volumes. Otherwise, apart from slight age toning, a very good copy of this scarce two-volume edition. ~SP17~ Alfonso Reyes Ochoa (1889-1959) was a Mexican writer, philosopher and diplomat. At the age of 21, Reyes published his first book, Cuestiones Esteticas. The following year, 1912, he wrote a short story, La Cena ('The Supper'), considered a forerunner of surrealism and of Latin American magical realism. He was a prolific writer, publishing more than two dozen books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. The Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges referred to Reyes as 'the greatest prose writer in the Spanish language of any age.' Antonio Castro Leal (1896-1981), who edited this edition and wrote the foreword, was a Mexican diplomat and intellectual. N° de ref. del artículo SP17-0351-2878
