The book had been gifted to her in August of 1813 by Elisha Mack (1783-1859), who died a resident of Salem. Peabody worked with her husband, silversmith Julius Aboyneau Palmer (1803-1872), a partner in Palmer, Batchelder & Co. Jewelers, the treasurer of the American Tract Society, Whig politician, and Temperance candidate in the 1858 Boston Mayoral Election. They were parents of Harvard professor and translator of The Odyssey George Herbert Palmer (1842-1933) and Julius A. Palmer Jr. (1840-1899), an explorer who became the personal assistance of Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii. Palmer, considered by the Queen to be a man of unblemished honor and integrity was a royalist who opposed the American overthrow of the islands, and was the Queen s American assistant and point of contact for many social and political events, including the first inauguration of William McKinley.
