The author, who was a superintendent of gold mining properties in Alaska at the time, met Professor Alexander P. Serebrovsky in 1927. He ended up spending ten years in Russia as a mining advisor. These 310 pages, UNillustrated, give us a look at the socio-political climate he found there, all most as much as, a view of mines and minerals. Learn more about : Soviet Gold Trust, kulaks, denomadization, Yakutia, lead-zinc, Buriat Mongols, milling plants, labour-camps, Novo-Sibirsk, stopes, sabotage, cost-accounting, and Sergo Ordjonikidze. Cond : Boards are blue with gilt lettering -spine only. End-papers are MAPS centering on the Kirghiz Steppe. D.J. is white with blue decoration and yellow lettering. D.J. graphic is a styilized view of the Russian countryside with roads, mineheads, railways and communist symbols. D.J. is much tattered along top and bottom edges. Material missing at top. Slight spine fade. D.J. is price-clipped. Volume is sli. yellowed with age but else tight, bright, and clean - with no marks, no tears. Great pre-cold war nostalgia !! Quote (p. 60) : " They still owned their great herds of camels and milk-maresand sheep. In Kochar, the process of `liquidating' the so-called `nepmen' or small private retail merchants, had been started but not completed, it had gone far enough to interfere a bit with our supply of clothing and manufactured goods.
