Descripción:

Roy. 8vo., newly and firmly bound in boards, portion of original printed wrapper mounted on upper board, a very good, clean copy. Last portion of a notable three-part sale spread over some three years (1885-87). This portion comprises 2,937 lots sold over eight days and representing the subject areas of bibliography, clerical works, history, biography, legal, medical, genealogy and topography. Within these topics there were specific sections devoted to Acts of Parliament, Allan Tracts, Almanacks [sic], the publications of the London Society of Antiquaries, auction catalogues, booksellers' and print-sellers' catalogues, diocesan calendars, drawings, and family histories and pedigrees. Individual highlights include a LP copy of the First Folio of Shakespeare, a LP copy of Dugdale's Baronetage and Earl Coningsby's Manor of Marden. Leonard Lawrie Hartley was listed in Quaritch's 'Dictionary of English Book-Collectors' as a collector of 'Topography and County History' and certainly topography is well represented in the current catalogue (lots 1818-2130). The sale of his library, apparently brought about by order of the Court of Chancery, is yet another example of old-established libraries going under the hammer during the latter years of the century. 'The proportion of old libraries, still even partly extant, is remarkably small' (Quaritch, op. cit). It is of interest that the formal catalogue of the collection was compiled by J. Corbet Anderson (himself a noted historian of Surrey) and printed by Blades, East & Blades which firm was founded by William Blades of 'Pentateuch' fame. Scarce. N° de ref. de la librería 5565
