8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. viii + 245 pp. Rebound in quarter calf over marbled boards, with new endpapers; spine in compartments with raised bands. Some foxing of preliminaries and occasional spotting elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. Faint stamp of Birmingham Medical Institute on title page. Decorated by endpiece vignette. The second volume of the author's Surgical Observations (later completed in four volumes), including numerous case studies of diseases of the digestive organs and urethra. Dr. John Abernethy, F.R.S. (1764-1831) was Assistant Surgeon at St. Barholomew's Hospital from 1787 to 1815 when he became Principal Surgeon until 1827. He founded the medical school there and in 1814 became Lecturer in Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons. He believed that a variety of diseases were caused by digestive disorders and promoted the Abernethy Biscuit named after him as an aid to digestion. Handsomely rebound copy of this scarce title.
