Descripción:

Jane's Publishing, London, 1980. Hard Cover w/ dj, 7 x 10, . Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition;, 482 pages, prof. illustrated, many appendices, notes, bibliog., index.----------------------------Remarkably detailed and authoritative, this book starts where the last official history of the Royal Marines ends. It is the result of years of intensive research in close collaboration with the Corps Archivist, and the many contributions from ex-service and serving members, including eyewitness reports, have brought life to this inspiring history. The Royal Marines, now mainly Commandos, are an elite fighting force which has served with distinction in so many different roles by land, sea and air that their history reveals the development of modern warfare in general and Commando techniques in particular. In the course of the 'rough, tough history of the Royal Marines', as Sir Winston Churchill has described it, they have manned guns in all the major actions of the Royal Navy and served ashore as commandos and raiders. There were Royal Marine pilots with the Fleet Air Arm as well as anti-aircraft brigades, coastal gunners and an armoured assault group. Marines crewed many of the British assault landing craft in the June 1944 invasion of Normandy and they manned the guns of the close-support craft that covered these and many other landings.Between 1919 and 1980 the Corps has fought against the Bolsheviks in northern Russia, in China, across icy Arctic waters on convoy escort duty, in the dust and heat of defeat on Crete, through the steamy jungles of Malaya, across north-west Europe's great rivers, where commandos spearheaded the many difficult assaults, in landings among the mangrove swamps of Burma, to final victory in 1945. Palestine in the late 1940s, the return to Malaya in the 1950s, Korea, Suez, and long campaigns in Cyprus, Borneo, Aden and Northern Ireland are a few of the places where marines have seen action since World War II; today they deploy in preparation in Norway guarding NATO's vital northern flank.Marines served as commandos for some of the first raids on the enemy coast in the early years of World War II and by 1943 they were providing nine Commandos for full-scale combined operations and numerous raiding units. In 1946 all commandos were Royal Marines and shortly afterwards the ranks of the Corps included some 4000 commandos and raiding units, 2000 as ships' detachments, 3000 as landing and amphibious squadrons, and 1000 acting as engineers, drivers and in other support capacities. Descripción Jane's, London, 1980. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good+. First Edition. This is a 'Doctored' Ex-Library copy which the former owner has worked on to remove all signs of this being a former library book. He has done it pretty well and from the outside there are No signs of it being Ex-Lib apart from minor glue stains to the dustjacket spine where the labelling has been removed. In the original black boards with bright silver-gilt titling to the spine, and in the original publisher's decorated dustjacket. Neither of which have any library markings. Internally however the endpapers have been replaced by new ones and he has stuck a plain white sticker over the large library stamp that was on the reverse of the title page - however it still shows through to the Title page somewhat. Otherwise NO other library signs anywhere in the book that I can see. The page fore-edges are grubby and so are the rear endpapers. The boards have crease lines running down the spine, rubbing to the bottom and a white stain to the front. The dustjacket has light smudging, some minor crease lines and a closed tear to the top of the spine which has been internally repaired with white tape. Overall despite its former status as a Ex-Lib copy, as noted above, this is a Clean, Tight and Bright 'Good' copy. 482 pp. Illustrated in b/w with photos, maps, plans, etc. 7 Appendices; Notes on Sources; Bibliography & Index. " James Ladd has written clearly and in depth of the many roles and exciting actions of the Royal Marines so that the reader will understand exactly how they fought and how their techniques developed over six decades in which they were seldom out of action or deployed in readiness." ; Ex-Library; 4to 11" - 13" small.
