To all which is Subjoined A Plain and Serious Address to the Master of the Family on the Important Subject of Family Religion, by Philip Doddridge, Printed by Robert Porter, Wilmington, Delaware, 1810, 311 pp, full original leather, 6.75 x 4.5 , 18mo. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing, scratching and light staining to surface of leather. Rodent damage to right edge of front board about 2 . Worming to front board at top left corner. Spine abraded and dried with loss at top compartment. Rear board afflicted with white transparent dampness stain (possibly paint) at bottom left corner. Reuben Foster (son) March 2nd 1827 in old hand on front fly leaf. Old orange wax remnants on pastedowns. Dampness staining to leaves throughout. Reuben Foster s (father) Book March the 29th, 1810 on second fly leaf. Significant foxing throughout text. Free of known markings. Binding tight. Overall soiled. Please see photos. Early Wilmington imprint with two generations of ownership. Philip Doddridge D.D. (1702-1751) was an English Nonconformist minister, educator, and hymnwriter. Throughout the 1730s and 1740s Doddridge continued his academic and pastoral work, and developed close relations with numerous early religious revivalists and independents, through extensive visits and correspondence. Through this approach he helped establish and maintain a circle of influential independent religious thinkers and writers, including Dr Isaac Watts . He also became a prolific author and hymnwriter.
