He is also a Jew. He is a respected member of the prosperous Jewish Community in Boston, Mass. But, like so many other parents, he and his wife Bessie, now middle aged, find themselves unable to understand what is happening to their children as they grow up. During his Harvard career, their son Richard tries to achieve a compromise between the Jewish way of life to which he has been brought up, and the free, typically American, way of life which he feels his education and ambition are compelling him to adopt. His fifteen-year-old sister Dorothy is gauche, shy, burdened with a stammer, confused by the longings which are awakening within her, antagonistic towards her parents' well-meant efforts to give her a normal, happy life. Myron Kaufmann brings his characters to vivid life, depicting unerringly the fumbling wisdom of middle age, the unintentional cruelty of youth, the subtle reactions to complicated and conflicting loyalties, mingled always with the saving touch of humour which imbues real everyday life.
