SHAFFER, Peter. THE ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN. A Play Concerning the Conquest of Peru. Twelvemo, dark brown cloth (stamped in silver on spine), 84 pages. Inscribed and signed by Peter Shaffer: "To Michael Curtis from Peter Shaffer, with best wishes" (on title page). Peter Levin Shaffer, playwright and screenwriter, was born in Liverpool, England (in 1926) to Jewish parents (his father an estate agent); he studied at Cambridge. His first play, The Salt Land (1954), was presented on the BBC. His plays have won numerous awards, including the Evening Standard Drama Award [for Five Finger Exercises (1958), Equus (1973) and Amadeus (1979)]; the New York Drama Critics' Award [for Five Finger Exercises (1960), Equus (1973)]; Antoinette Perry Award [for Amadeus (1979)]; the Tony Award [for Equus (1975)]. Several of Peter Shaffer's plays have been adapted to film: The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1969), Equus (1977), and Amadeus (1984) [which won eight Academy Awards including "Best Picture"]. He received the William Inge Award for Distinguished Achievement in the American Theater in 1992. A near fine copy in near fine dust jacket.
