HC275. viii + 116pp. The comittee recognized the special value of canals for transporting heavy goods but considered that, in general, canals could not hope to compete with railways. The evidence of canal owners gives a vivid account of the rapis decline of canals in the face of competition from the railways. The committee considered that amalgamation of railway and canal companies should be allowed subject to conditions designed to protect the interests of rail and canal users. A clean copy.
