HC531. 1075pp. The Select Committee, chaired by Lord Ashley, examined the effectiveness of the Poor Law Medical system as a means of aiding the sick poor. William Farr, a senior official in the office of the Registrar General, suggested that the main causes of illness among the poorer classes was lack of adequate nourishment and poor sanitary facilities. He considered that the service could be improved by reducing the size of medical districts and increasing the slaries of medical officers. The majority of the lay witnesses examined by the committee agreed with Farr's views. .Evidence reveals the lack of medical facilities for the poor. . A very clean copy. A heavy volume.
