Illustrated dust jacket sound/VG. Maurice Collis' great gift was in making history readable and interesting for the general reader without straying from the recognised records of events. Raffles is a fine example of this skill and comes after the publication of twenty-seven other works covering autobiographies, histories, biographies, travel, novels and romances and drama. Sir Stamford Raffles is best remembered as the founder of Singapore but he was also an able administrator, humanitarian, pioneer orientalist and collector of animals and plants. His life became a succession of success and setbacks, none more so than the displeasure of the East India Company at his actions. Despite these setbacks nobody did more than Raffles to open up the Far East and create the conditions for modern Asia to emerge from the dissolution of Old Asia and he died at a tragically early age but at least having re-established his reputation and fortune. Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
