This is one of the more scarce of the prolific series of NZofficial war histories covering all Services and the Home Front in WWII. It is notable as a record of aspects of military campaigning not dealt with in the campaign and unit histories of 2 NZ Expeditionary Force and thus serves as a valuable round-out to the series. The focus is on the NZ Army's participation in early Mediterranean operations, including Crete, followed by the North African Desert and Italian campaigns. Part one records the activies of 2 NZEF from its formation to the withdrawal of troops from Italy. Part two relates to the upper level command and headquarters structures and of the relationship between the top command of the 2 NZEF and the NZ Government and the extent of authority allocated to each. Other chapters cover Field and Base; Manpower; Womanpower, Crimes Follies and Misfortunes; Wefare and a number of other issues. The fact that only one chapter on deals with military discipline suggests that this was not a major "problem." First edition of 1958, 331 pages includingf 14 appendices and index, 32 b/w photographs including frontispiece, three colour toned fold-out maps. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles with impressed coat-of-arms to front are NF with few tiny marks, internally excellent, no inscriptions. No DJ fitted, but the complete and original jacket with illustration to front is loosely enclosed, virtually complete but torn into three sectiions.
