Thomas Whittaker, New York [Published Date: NO date list, circa 1880]. Hardcover, iv, 252 pp. "By the Author of 'The Peep of the Day,' and 'Line upon Line'." Title page states: A Third Series of the Earliest Religious Instruction the Infant and is capable of receiving; with verses illustrative of the subjects. An early edition of Favell Lee Moritmer's third book in her Peep of Day series, the early editions of which were published anonymously "by the Author of ." Small (4 3/8 x 6 1/4") cloth covered boards with color inset illustration of a young child in a Scottish tartan and hat, and decorative black border and gold lettering on spine. With Frontispiece illustrations by unknown illustrator and an illustration at page 43 signed by "Richardson". In good condition with some nicking and fraying to the cloth over the corners and top and bottom of spine and moderate overall scuffing and soiling. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. The Peep of Day series was immensely popular due to Favell Mortimer's ability to present the gospel clearly to very young children by using simple vocabulary and sentence structure and with short "lessons" each about 5-6 pages in length. The publisher of this book, Tomas Whittaker, started in 1874 in New York and published primarily religious and moralistic books.
