Descripción

Oblong 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 204 pages; [1819] J. Arnett of Westminster. Vol I of II only of this unusual illustrated rogue's gallery of infamous London street characters. Sold with all faults. Viii, 204 pp, with frontis and 27 engraved plates. [Unsigned]4. B-I12; K6. Apparently lacking 5 plates, as there are 33 separate character profiles in this volume. A somewhat crude early 20th century rebinding with coated paper over boards and backed in oilcloth. Endpages missing; frontis Is glued down to the front board. The engraved title page and front matter is followed by 20 of the engraved plates with a further 7 appearing adjacent to the narrative entries for that personage. Several of the plates are trimmed down to the image and mounted on paper. Plate of Jeffrey Hudson is missing the lower spine side corner, with some loss of image. Yawning gap between the frontis and title page; soiling and grubbiness to some several of the plates and light scattered soiling to a few of the text pages. Text is complete. Uncommon and unusual collection of portraits of London's most infamous street people, pickpockets, swindlers, con-men, savants and mad-men - including from this volume "Moll Cut-Purse, " Jack Cottington "Mull'd Sack," "The Pig-Pye Man, " Francis Battalia "Stone Eater, " Dick Swift "Thief-Taker, " "Buckhorse" etc. Etc. A copy which would benefit from restoration. N° de ref. de la librería 21505
