This is the story of an industry that started from scratch after World War II and grew to make most of the motorcycles in existence today, told in a decade-by¬-decade treatment commencing in the early 1950s and running through to 1990. Each decade is introduced with a description of general trends and developments, including a review of the state of motorcycle design and technology in that period and a look at the market position of the leading makers as well as less well-known or forgotten ones. This is followed by a detailed examination of significant models. Particular features of the 1950s section will be the full story - told for the first time and with previously unpublished photographs - of the ill-fated Lilac, and an examination of the Honda Dream, the first Japanese motorcycle to be exported in any numbers In the 1960s and 1970s sections the mailer of models studied is greater, reflecting increased demand and varied requirements in export markets, and tougher competition between the big players, milky strove to gain market shame. Thme119705 section also features a number of prototypes that never made it birr By 1980 the Japanese industry completely dominated the scene and the Big Four manufacturers - Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha - were offering bewilderingly large ranges of models, of which a representative selection are described.
