(Brivois, 318 ; Carteret, 460). ~~~~ ENGLISH ~~~~ First edition of this monument of illustrated book of the nineteenth century. We offer the first edition with prints on China (another edition is on vellum with cut lace margins). The set is full of his two volumes: Les Joyaux [followed with] Minéralogie des dames by Cte Foelix, 4 ff., 316 pp. illustrated with a frontispiece and 15 plates & Les Parures [followed with] Histoire de la mode by Cte de Foelix, 4 ff., 300 pp. illustrated with a frontispiece and plates. This suite of romantic tales, on the model of the Arabian Nights, plunges the reader into the dreamy delight for almost two centuries and Gavarni’s illustrations explain this success. As magically engraved, female figures seem diaphanous and light, a true fantasized vision. Our copy has several qualities for bibliophiles beyond the first edition: the original covers are bound-in, margins are full and not trimmed, most pages are uncut. Half leather bound with corners, gilt title on the back, marbled endpapers, 29 x 19.5 cm. The bindings are slightly rubbed, rare foxing, some protective tissues between text and illustrations are missing but they have no interest and should even be removed for any foxing risk they pose, good condition. (Brivois, 318; Carteret, 460). N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción Paris/Leipzig (G. de Gonet/ Charles Twietmeyer), n.d. [1850]., 1850. (2), 300pp. Frontispiece and 15 steel engraved plates hors texte, the whole finished by hand in colors, and the plates themselves printed on doilies tipped onto pink guards, the pink visible throughout the elaborately full percaline, elaborately gilt and colored with designs on both covers and spine. 4to. Publisher’s original full percaline, elaborately gilt and colored identically on each companion volume. A.e.g. Tissue guards. Later protective chemise. Together with: Les joyaux. Fantaisie par Gavarni. Texte par Méry. Minéralogie des dames par Cte. Foelix. (Perles et Parues.) (2), 316pp. Frontispiece and 16 steel-engraved plates hors texte, the whole finished by hand in colors, and the plates printed on doilies in the same format as the foregoing. "These books contain thirty-two engravings on steel by Geoffroy after Gavarni. They are studies of beautiful women, fashionably attired for the most part, which were drawn in London. Méry wrote the ‘fantasy’ accompanying them to fit Gavarni’s designs." (Gordon Ray). After mentioning the ordinary edition of the work, Ray proceeds to discuss this "far more appealing.special edition, in which the steel engravings are printed and delicately colored on paper with borders cut to various lace patterns. So presented, Gavarni’s designs became fashion plates of the first order." Intermittent light foxing, mostly on the tissue guards and not the plates; a very desirable set, the original bindings still brilliant. Nº de ref. de la librería B09524-5

Descripción Paris: G. de Gonet [et al].[&] a Leipzig: Chez Charles Twietmeyer, [1850]., 1850. Two volumes. [4],316pp. plus frontis and fifteen plates; [2],300pp. plus frontis and fifteen plates. Large octavo (27.5 x 18.7cm). Very handsome 20th century half tan morocco, raised bands, ruled in blind, lettered in gilt, and marbled boards, t.e.g., others rough-trimmed, with the original decorative pictorial rose-on- cream wrappers bound in. Occasional very minor foxing or dust-soiling, wrappers a trace soiled, with a couple of small edge mends, a handful of small creases or snags to the edges of the lace borders (see below), light rubbing to extremities, but a near fine, large, crisp set. First editions, in the most desirable form, with the texts printed on vélin, and with the frontispieces and plates (engraved by Geoffrey after Gavarni) delicately hand- colored. The plates are of particular interest, because in this format, they are printed on sheets with elaborate and delicate stencil-cut lace pattern frames and borders. The plates "are studies of beautiful women, fashionably attired for the most part, which were drawn in London. Méry wrote the 'fantasy' accompanying them to fit Gavarni's designs.[in] this special edition.Gavarni's designs become fashion plates of the first order" - Ray. "La réunion des deux ouvrages avec les gravures à marges de dentelles est assez rare à recontrer" - Carteret. RAY (FRENCH) 209a-210. CARTERET III:460-1. VICAIRE V:770-1.
