Descripción Unknown - Sold By Ling Yu Sing, Foochow, China, 1920. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. Presumed First Edition. No date, but this is an early 20th Century Chinese book with 12 lovely hand-painted illustrations depicting the tale of the the cultivation of rice, starting with how Water Buffalo are used to prepare the soil. The book has a 'fold-out accordion binding' which when folded out to the full extent, cover to cover, measures c. 3. 5 metres (c. 11' 5" or c. 350 cms) with a wood cover front and back. A Chinese "Foo" (Fu) character is carved into front board and attractively infilled with a green chalky substance. A little of this 'infill' has been rubbed off. See Images. The History of the cover design (The "Foo" (Fu) character = Happiness) is given in English on the first page. The Left Hand side pages consist of 12 beautiful bright, full colour, hand-painted pictures on silk, showing the growing of rice from 'Preparing the soil' through all the stages of growth to harvesting, ending with 'Nothing is wasted' showing how the grainless straw is utilised in Mattresses, straw and rope. Opposite the illustrations on the right hand side are descriptions of the activities in both English and Chinese. No publisher noted, but evidently part of a series produced circa 1916/20s - possibly earlier or possibly later? . Text in English & Chinese. The top board is VERY slightly curved, there is some light damp-staining to the creases/page edges where the pages are concertina'd, but none of this affects the text or paintings on the reverse. A few 'closed' tears (a couple with traces of old repairs) all of which are now neatly repaired to the reverse with clear archive tape - not really noticable. Some deeper staining affects a portion of the (plain) endpapers. A patch of old tanning sellotape on the blank top of the double 'Cultivating the rice' page. A gift note in English is on the rear endpaper and an 'eye-shaped' seller's label on the pastedown of the rear board = Ling Yu Sing, Gift Shop, 9 Doi Hu Road, Foochow, China. The top and bottom edges of the pages are bordered with metallic paper (possibly tarnished gilt? ). Overall a lovely period peice with delightful Chinese Artwork - presumably produced as Souvenirs for Foreign visitors? At the time of listing I also have another book in this series for sale - 'The Story of Silk'. See Images. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. Nº de ref. de la librería 113994
