This is a rare souvenir program from the Post-Broadway tour of the OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II and GEORGES BIZET musical "CARMEN JONES". (The production opened December 2nd, 1943 at New York's Broadway Theatre where it ran for a respectable 502 performances before going on the road.) . Oscar Hammerstein first thought of adapting "Carmen" for Broadway after hearing the opera in a concert performance at the Hollywood Bowl in the 1930's. He worked at the libretto for some years, only finishing it in 1942, just as he was beginning work on "Oklahoma!" with Richard Rodgers. The re-vamped piece was rejected by several producers before Billy Rose agreed to stage it.
