Sixth edition. 'Stillingfleet wrote his next important book, the first edition of his Origines Sacrae in 1662. This has been well described as the first orderly treatment of the rational religion of Latitudinarianism, and it remains the most complete. On the strength of this work Stillingfleet was asked to respond to a Jesuit account of the debate between Archbishop Laud and the Jesuit, John Fisher, a response which brought him more approbation and led to a series of London preferments, contact with powerful men in the city and his being made a royal chaplain. Pepys noted that when he preached to the House of Commons in 1666 there was no standing room' (G.A.J.
