According to their website, "Nommo is the Afrikan Newsmagazine at UCLA. It draws its name from the Ki-Swahili termNommo, which means the magical power of the word. First printed December 4, 1968, Nommo joined UCLA s Student Media in 1969 to become the first ethnic student run publication on a United States public university campus" (www.nommomagazine.com).Contents include an Editorial on Culture and Angela Davis, an interview with Dr. Arthur Smith, Black Poet s Corner, Director of Afro-American Studies at UCLA, and articles including "Fanon vs Marx vs Cabral," "Justice Is Not Blind," "Manifestos of Black Poetry," "Afro-Americans and Language," "The Cultural Historian and the Black Experience" (with Professor Mary Jane Hewitt), "The Black Theater," "Impressions of Curtis Mayfield," and a full-page ad on back page reading "UCLA s Center for Afro-American Studies presents Gwendolyn Brooks, Renowned Poetess and Lecturer."Not found in commerce, and only 7 institutions have holdings according to OCLC, although the majority have later issues with no indication of this issue present (UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Virginia, NYPL, Wisconsin Historical Society, Prairie View A&M).
