First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13 cm, 285pp. Signed directly to the title page by William Trevor. From the dustwrapper, "A new collection of twelve stories, their settings Irish, English or Italian, perfectly exemplifies his great qualities subtlety, honesty, humanity. None does this more trikingly than the long title story, 'The News from Ireland', which is set in the house and estate of the Protestant Pulvertafts during the famine years of the 1840s. The old owner has died and old relations from Ipswich, Pulvertafts still, and decent people, but strangers, have crossed the sea to take it over. The sharp eyes of Fogarty, the butler, see them as outsiders; equally acutely he watches with almost sinister fascination the behaviour of then new young governess from England, Anna Maria Heddoe, whose letters and diary he secretly reads. Will she prove an ally, and enemy, or another victim of the Ireland he thinks he knows in his bones? The story is not only a brilliant evocation of a moment in Irish history, but also an ironic study of the sterility of bitterness and good intentions alike." Condition: A very good copy. The book has clean pages and secure binding, but with some speckled foxing to the pages' top edge. The dustwrapper is a little faded to the spine but has not been price-clipped but is now within a protective sleeve. N° de ref. de la librería
Sinopsis: With stories set in Ireland, England, and Italy, this rich collection perfectly exemplifies Trevor's three great qualities: subtlety, honesty, and humanity. A fond depiction of the sad, anticlimactic moments in ordinary lives by a master of the short story.
From Library Journal:
These richly detailed dramas of small actions with large consequences will enhance any general fiction collection. These are stories of lost love, hope, and innocence, turning on a misinterpreted phrase or a misplaced handbag. Friendships split as revenge is taken on a Joycean scholar or is exacted by a lexicographer's daughter, in both cases destroying a life's work. The impossible love of two young girls for a dying boy becomes the wedge that leaves them passing strangerstourists, as many here, in their own lives. The stories are set in Ireland, England, and Italy; and the "news" from every quarter seems to be that no one escapes the evocative powers of memory, no one the past.
