Color-tinted lithograph on heavy stock, finished by hand (25 1/2 x 36 1/2 in.; 64.8 x 92.7 cm). CONDITION/BINDING: Several expertly repaired tears in upper image, another through the title block. Matted. (65B4A) AN "UNUSUAL PANORAMA OF THE EAST RIVER WATERFRONT" (Deák) which encompasses a large portion of the settled area of Manhattan and its surrounds. Beyond the island and across the Hudson, the New Jersey shore is visible. The Manhattan waterfront is crowded with ferry houses, slips, and vessels in drydock. A wide strip of the Brooklyn shore runs along the lower margin of the lithograph, with the United States Navy Yard in the foreground. On the river, there are numerous examples of ships in use during the mid-nineteenth century. Featured are the river steamboats C. Vanderbilt and Bay State, uncovered ferryboats, a three-masted war vessel, and a large tow boat. Views of Manhattan in 1623 and 1673 below the caption counterpoints the burgeoning development of the city in the mid-nineteenth century. PROVENANCE: Swann Galleries, 13 December 2018, lot 375.
