This is a compendium of information containing, speeches, oratory, poetry, humor, biography, etc. "for the twentieth century." There is a section of full page photos and short biographies of the greatest American orators, and of special interest are also the many full page photos of women in Victorian dress of the era. Original decorated red cloth, pictorial covers with oval pictorial paste-down of a Victorian woman. The first section of this book "Elocution and Physical Culture" begins on page 65, however, there are not 65 pages of preliminary matter preceeding the text--this has also been the case with other copies of this book we have had in the past. The gilt cover decorations are dull in may places as is the gilt spine lettering. There is not much wear to the covers and the edges are clean and sharp, but there is a light whitish streak to the rear cover a bit of rippling toward the top of the rear cover. The contents are clean, bright and unmarked, and there is no owner name in this book. This provides an interesting glimpse into the social life, amusements, and ideals of American women at the beginning of the twentieth century. ; B&W Photographs; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 604 pages.
