Woodcut map on 16 sheets joined (46 x 56 in. overall; 116.8 x 142.2 cm), folding into original plain self wrappers with printed paper label pasted to upper cover; light staining, small repairs to fold intersections. TOGETHER WITH: A faithfully drawn early manuscript version of the printed map on 18 sheets of thin washi joined measuring (44 x 45 in. overall; 111.8 x 114.3 cm); small area of loss at upper left. (65B1A) LARGE AND IMPORTANT WALL MAP COMBINING BUDDHIST COSMOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY CARTOGRAPHY, THE EARLIEST JAPANESE MAP TO FEATURE SUCH A REPRESENTATION. The map is based on a Buddhist perspective of the world with India at the center. At its heart a whorl appears, symbolizing the four major rivers of the region: the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra, and the Sutlej each originating from the heads of a horse, lion, elephant, and an ox. Contemporary geography is related showing Europe as a series of islands in the upper left, China and Japan to the right, and South America as an island in the lower right.
