In good condition. Leather is soft and rich in color. Torti in ink on top left corner of front board. Spine is beautifully gilt, but exhibits some light dry rot. Some light cracking at hinges. Beautifully hand marbled end papers are somewhat faded. Front gutter is shaken. Light toning to text block. Previous owner s name from 1759 on front title page. Text is clean and unmarked. Binding remains tight and intact. Fever tree fold out in working condition. Please see photos. Scarce medical text with interesting content. Francesco Torti was an Italian physician who studied at the University of Bologna, graduating in 1678. In 1670 he and Bernardino Ramazzini headed the department of medicine in the newly created University of Modena. He was the first to systematically study the effect of cinchona bark in the treatment of malaria. This was his major work. Although some sources consider him to have introduced the word malaria , he never used the term in his writings. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1717. Our book includes his drawing of tree of fevers , where different fevers, such a branches of the tree Are divided into categories: on the left, those that respond to cinchona, are show as branches that are covered in leaves, where branches that do not respond are bare. By the end of the 18th century, formulations were more standardized and cinchona was established as a legitimate drug for general use against specific intermittent fevers.
