** SCARCE ** NEAR FINE TO FINE CONDITION ** HARDCOVER ** NOT EX-LIBRARY ** CLEAN AND BRIGHT ** STAIN-FREE AND UNMARKED ** ILLUSTRATED ** 10TH EDITION ** Published by J. P. Mendum in 1875. Photos accessed to the left of this listing are of the actual book you will be sent; please examine them closely as they provide the best indication of the book's condition. This is NOT a print-on-demand copy. Book stands a bit over 7.5 inches tall. With 89 pages. This is the preferred rarely seen 10th Edition, with now famous frontispiece of a mother leaving her unwanted baby on a doorstep, with the crude "anatomical" drawing showing sperm (labeled animalcules) and the female reproductive organs, and with an Appendix and notes by the publisher at the end. A very nearly fine, still bright copy of the first book published in the U.S. on birth control (specifically, coitus interruptus). Scarce in any edition, especially in this excellent condition. The book shows only very brief, extremely occasional, and quite minor signs of use. Well-made book, bound in heavy duty cloth-covered boards with beveled edges, clean, very bright embossed gilt on the front, and with elaborate embossed designs and decorations in black. Rear board decorated in blind, spine left blank by the publisher. The book is exceedingly clean, still bright, and stain-free, square and straight, very firm and tight in its binding, no pages loose or missing. All hinges are sound and undamaged, all corners are unbumped. Perhaps just a hint of age-toning to the pages, but all text is crisp and sharp. There is no writing, underlining, or any other such markings in the book. There is an area of rubbing to the cloth at the top corner of the rear board, but otherwise the cloth binding remains surprisingly unworn, still crisp and fresh, appears almost like new.
